Stranded On A Highway In Canada: Travel Reflections

Monthly Update!

August brought the official end of our Newfoundland adventure. As we sailed on our 16-hour ferry from Argentia back toward Nova Scotia, we were filled with such gratitude for the beautiful experiences we had on "the rock" in our 5 weeks exploring the island.

We landed in North Sydney and headed straight to Cape Breton Island for more coastal fun and had a great time hiking the shoreline and learning more about the area's Celtic heritage.

We even continued our streak of not seeing ANY moose in Canada... so we are now convinced they in fact do not live up here πŸ˜‚

After leaving Cape Breton Highland National Park, we set out for the south shore of Nova Scotia. Not long after reflecting on how fortunate we had been in the past 2 years of travel, we had an array of warning lights jump on the dash, followed by a frantic truck flagging us down 30 minutes from our destination.

We hopped out of the truck to find our wheel smoking and felt our hearts drop. What we thought at first might have been a stuck caliper, was clearly something more as we found ourselves unable to limp down the highway any further.

Our wheel was turned in and looked as if it were about to fall off, and we were stuck with limited cell service on the very small shoulder of a highway in Canada with our only vehicle and our house in tow.

They say adventure comes in all shapes and sizes and this turned out to be quite the experience.

Thankfully we were safe and were eventually able to get arrangements for both our truck and our RV to be towed through AAA (CAA in Canada).

As we sat on a couple of boulders watching the sunset over the stretch of highway, we couldn't help but think of how much worse things could have been. Mishaps happen and the best you can do is prepare for them.

We choose not to let the fear of what could go wrong stop us from pursuing experiences that we find fulfilling and we hope we can help you arm yourself with the knowledge and tools to explore the unknown confidently as well!

We hope you are safe, happy, and healthy out there!

Mindfully,

Alyssa & Zach

Travel Tip: Have A Plan for When Things Go Wrong!

Towing an RV brings an additional level of complexity, as there are now 2 vehicles where things can go wrong when traveling. We highly recommend having a membership or service you can call if you break down, even in remote areas. A few to consider are:

  • AAA (CAA): We were able to be connected with service providers in Canada. While only our truck was covered for towing, they were able to help us find towing for our RV as well. Everything was fixed in a matter of days!
  • Coach-Net: This service has come highly recommended to us after our incident. They offer 24/7 technical and roadside assistance and have services in the U.S. and Canada.
  • Progressive Insurance: Progressive allows us to insure our RV for full-time living and offers benefits including reimbursement for roadside assistance

Have experience with another provider or a story about the good or bad from one of the services above? Reach out and share with us! We are passionate about bringing as much transparent information forward to the RVing community as we can.

This month we also launched a brand new website design and layout to continue to improve functionality as the site grows!

We have started to build out our Newfoundland travel guides, in addition to adding more tips and resources for RVing and boondocking. Check out what's new below!
